2 Corinthians 1:12 (NKJV)

For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father

I pray that today’s message

transition from a head knowledge into a heart revelation

and through the power and the person of the Holy spirit

renew our minds and transform our lives in the name of Jesus.

Amen

Introduction

Organizational Transparency

Characterized by visibility or accessibility of information especially concerning best practices and church values. Who, what, how and why of Pathway Church.

Individual Transparency

Free from pretense or deceit; easily detected or seen through; readily understood. Webster Dictionary

Last week we learned…

Greek for Simplicity is haplotēs, meaning: singleness, simplicity, sincerity, mental honest. The virtue of one who is free from pretense and hypocrisy; not self-seeking, openness of heart manifesting itself by generosity.

That’s the same Greek word Paul uses in 2 Cor. 1:12 to describe one half of the way he conducted himself, “in the world” and towards other believers.

The other half he called, “godly sincerity”.

Today I’m going to teach Organizational and Personal Transparency from scripture as “Godly Sincerity”.

2 Corinthians 1:12 (NKJV)

…we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.

Paul made four distinct points pertaining to how he conducted himself with simplicity (unpretentiousness) and godly sincerity (transparency)…

  1. In the World.

2 Corinthians 1:12 (NKJV) Shortened

For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity…

Greek for World is kosmos meaning: the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men alienated from God, and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ.

This simply describes people without God. Not evil or bad people to avoid, but rather very lost and hopeless people who need Christ.

Paul was clear that he was unpretentious and transparent with the lost!

Transparency

Free from pretense or deceit; easily detected or seen through; readily understood. Webster Dictionary

To be easy to see through and readily/easily understood is a very attractive quality to the lost. This is a rare quality in the world!

Ephesians 4:17-19 (NASB)

So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.

Paul is very strongly saying, “Walk no longer” as lost people walk!

Rather, conduct yourselves, “in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity”.

It is so important that the world, lost people, see Christians living very different lives than they live, or they will never come to Christ!

  1. More Abundantly Towards Believers.

2 Corinthians 1:12 (NKJV) Shortened

… we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.

Paul was emphatic that he was unpretentious and transparent with the other believers… even more so than with lost people!

More Abundantly means to an even greater degree!

To an even greater degree, Paul was transparent (unpretentious; easily seen through and understood with other believers.

To conduct oneself with simplicity and godly sincerity, I can assure you, is equally attractive to fellow believers. I’ve often heard it called, “being real”.

New Pathway Church Member

This is a response to a text I sent inviting a new couple to lunch…

“Absolutely! We really appreciate y’all. Means a lot to us and we love our new church home. Been a long time since we have looked forward to Sunday’s. Thank you for just being REAL!!”

Ephesians 4:20-24 (NASB)

But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

This is the new self, the new life, the new man! The new self conducts herself, in the world and with other believers, in simplicity and godly sincerity.

This is what we learn from Christ!

And we didn’t learn it through personal experience or mere gaining of knowledge, it is the wisdom that comes from a regenerated spirit and an inner work through Christ in our heart!

  1. Not with Fleshly Wisdom

2 Corinthians 1:12 (NKJV)

… we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom…

Greek for Fleshly is Sarkikos meaning: governed by mere human nature not by the Spirit of God.

You can never live a transparent life and we can’t be a transparent church with mere human (fleshly wisdom). It is only by the Spirit of God!

Paul contrast what is fleshly and what is Godly…

Ephesians 4:25-29 (NASB)

Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. 26 Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, Ref. Psalm 4:4 (NKJV)

Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity. 28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. 29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

This is grace FOR the believer; a thing the believer possesses above and beyond the grace TO believe!

  1. By the Grace of God.

2 Corinthians 1:12 (NKJV) Shortened

… we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.

Grace for the believer: the spiritual condition of one governed by the power of divine grace; that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness, grace of speech good will, loving-kindness and favor.

Ephesians 4:30-31 makes clear how God is affected when the believer is not governed by His divine grace…

Ephesians 4:30-31 (NASB)

Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

What grieves the Holy Spirit most, is the believer acting and living outside of the grace they’ve been freely given to live like the NEW SELF and not THE OLD SELF!

Divine Grace empowers you as a Christian to conduct yourself in simplicity and godly sincerity because you are now governed by Christ’s nature not mere human nature.

Your life is filled with joy, sweetness, charm, loveliness, good will, loving-kindness and favor.

Your NEW SELF will be free from pretense and hypocrisy and you can be transparent and easily understood by both, people who need to know and already know Christ.

Conclusion

This is the will of God! That we would conduct ourselves in simplicity and godly sincerity, 1 in the world, 2 more abundantly with each other, 3 not with fleshly wisdom but 4 by the grace of God!

This is what a truly transparent life looks like and it is what God desires for every believer in Christ!

Prayer for Congregation, through an inner work of the Holy Spirit, to supernaturally conduct ourselves in simplicity and godly sincerity.

Invitation for Salvation

Grace to believe: the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ. This same grace then keeps, strengthens, increases them in their Christian faith and kindles them to live according to Christian virtues.
