The Word of Wisdom and The Word of Knowledge

Opening Passage

1 Corinthians 12:7-8 (NKJV)

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father

I pray that today’s message

transition from a head knowledge into a heart revelation

and through the power and the person of the Holy spirit

renew our minds and transform our lives in the name of Jesus.

Amen

Introduction

GREEK for word is logos: what someone said or has spoken

S: To minister through the word of wisdom or knowledge you must actually speak to someone!

Joke: So, you must also have the gift of speaking to someone!

Seriously: The word of Knowledge or wisdom unspoken does not one a bit of good!

1 Corinthians 14:12 (NKJV)

Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

Advice: Hear clearly from God before speaking a word to someone and remember the word you speak must edify or build up!

Four clear instructions from Paul on the gifts of the Spirit

1 Corinthians 12 (NKJV)

  1. VS 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
  2. VS 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
  3. VS 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
  4. VS 31 But above all, you should want the more important gifts. And now I will show you the best way of all.

S: In chapter 13 Paul’s goes on to stress love as the most important thing.

S: Pathway’s Rule on the Gifts: No fruit, no gift. Everything must be in love.

Q: So, based on the progression of these instructions, what would be the most important gifts?

A: The gifts that benefit others!

S: Based on these criteria, the two gifts we are teaching today are extremely important!

1. What is the word of wisdom?

FIRST: What the word of wisdom it is not….

  1. LEARNED BY THE NATURAL MIND

  2. FORTUNE TELLING

  3. PSYCHOLOGY
4. BIBLICAL OR WORLDLY WISDOM
5. ALL OF GOD’S WISDOM
6. JUST FOR PASTORS AND CHURCH OFFICIALS

Q: What is the word of wisdom?

A Supernatural revelation of the plans & purposes in the mind of God that deal with the future. This is not a Gift of human wisdom or the “wise” kind of wisdom; it is God’s knowledge properly applied. With this Gift, only part or a fragment of information is given. God only gives us what we need to know at any given time.

Examples in the Bible

Acts 11:27-30 (NKJV)

And in these days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar. 29 Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea. 30 This they also did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

Q: What was the word of wisdom?

A: There was going to be a great famine!

Q: Do you see that it was about a future event?

Q: Why did this word need to be shared?

A: So the disciples could send relief!

Q: Nothing weird or spooky about that, right?

Acts 21:10-11 (NKJV)

And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’”

Q: Again, is this something Paul might want to know?

Notice what happens next…

Acts 21:12-14 (NASB)

When we had heard this, we as well as the local residents began begging him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but even to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 And since he would not be persuaded, we fell silent, remarking, “The will of the Lord be done!”

Don’t take it personally if someone doesn’t receive your words.

Jesus warns Peter about his tragic end…

John 21:18-19 (NKJV)

Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”

S: Jesus was letting Peter know that if he chose to follow Him this time, it was going to cost him his life.

Joke: On a positive note, Peter knew he would not die young.

John 1:46-50 (NKJV)

And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”

Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”

48 Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

Q: Why did Jesus do this?

A: Nathanael was being chosen as a disciple and needed to believe!

Point of Interest

It is quite common in ministering for multiple gifts to be at work simultaneously.

In this passage, we see the gist of discerning of spirits, the word of knowledge and the word of wisdom all at once…

VS:51 (NKJV)

And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Final Point on Words of Wisdom

Q: Now if these super-natural revelations were not spoken or shared they wouldn’t do anyone much good, would they?

  • If Agabus had of kept things to himself, people would have starved and Paul wouldn’t have been prepared for what would happen in Jerusalem.
  • If Jesus had not spoken what He knew to Peter, he might have felt betrayed when he was old and put to death.

Q: Do you get it? It ain’t about you; it’s about the other guy!

  1. What is the word of knowledge?

FIRST: What the word of knowledge it is not.

  • NOT NATURALLY GAINED KNOWLEDGE
  • NOT THE GIFT OF ALL KNOWLEDGE
  • NOT THE ABILITY TO MAKE GOOD GUESSES
  • NOT SIMPLY GENERAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT GOD

Q: What is the word of knowledge?

A Supernatural revelation of certain facts in the mind of God that deal with the past or present. This is not a Gift of human knowledge or the “smarts” kind of knowledge. With this Gift only part or a fragment of information is given. God is all knowing but he only gives us what we need to know at any given time. It is God’s knowledge not your knowledge!

Examples in the Bible

My Personal Favorite

John 4:5-26 and 39-42(NKJV)

So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.” 19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.

Q: Why did Jesus reveal such a sensitive secret even through the word of knowledge?

A: First, this woman obviously had a wrong idea of who Jesus was; Jesus needed to influence her and change her perception. More importantly ― by revealing this to her ― Jesus reversed the strong hold Satan had on her life and changed others opinion of her in the process. She went from being a mess to being a messenger.

S: Look at what happens when we allow the Holy Spirit to use us in this way!

39And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own word.

S: Because this woman met Jesus and he ministered to her through the word of knowledge, many others were saved!

42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.”

  1. God is still giving gifts.

Q: Do you want to share your knowledge and your wisdom with someone in need or God’s knowledge and God’s wisdom?

James 3:16-18 (NLT)

For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of every kind. 17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.

Stories

Two Words of Wisdom both were Warnings

  1. The Word ignored, Lifesong Church and Fun Zone Skating Rink
  2. The Word unspoken

Years ago, a couple in the church would tell Lori and I how they fought.

We tried over and over to get them to meet with us and get counseling, but it never happened. That was really our knowledge and wisdom at work.

One day after church, the Lord gave Lori a word of knowledge for the wife but not wanting to offend she kept it to herself.

The word was, “Don’t fight with your husband today.”

That same day we got a call from the chief of police that the husband was dead after an argument.

One Word from God will change everything!

Invitation for Salvation (heads bowed eyes closed)

Q: Did you know that Jesus has a gift for you today?

It is the gift of salvation!

In fact, He has a word of wisdom for you pertaining to your today and your future!

Romans 10:8-11 (NASB)

But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.”

The Word, Jesus, is near you!!! He is already in your heart! I’m preaching to you today, if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved!

That’s the simple truth, confess and believe and you will be saved!

Prayer Salvation

Father, thank you for your Word, your Son, whom you loved. Thank you for sending Him to sacrifice His life for me so I can have life eternal with you. Today, I confess that I am a sinner in need of a savior. I repent of my sins and I believe in my heart that Jesus died on a cruel cross, was buried in a borrowed tomb and rose from the grave on the third day. I believe in the simple Gospel, the good news that I can now be saved because of Jesus Christ finished work on the cross!!  Because I repent, confess and believe… today I am saved and have the security of knowing I will spend my eternity in heaven!
